The Kwara Boat Disaster

On the night of June 12, 2023, an overcrowded wooden boat carrying more than 250 villagers across the Niger River in Kwara State, Nigeria, struck a submerged tree trunk and capsized. At least 106 people were confirmed dead—most of them women and children—in one of the country’s deadliest recent waterway disasters.
