HMS Ark Royal (91): commissioning, wartime operations and loss
HMS Ark Royal was commissioned into the Royal Navy on December 16, 1938. She won national fame in May 1941 when her Fairey Swordfish torpedo-bombers disabled the German battleship Bismarck, and she was lost after a U‑boat torpedo struck her on the night of November 13, 1941; Ark Royal sank in the early hours of November 14, 1941, after prolonged salvage attempts off Gibraltar.
