Beginning in mid‑August 2019 and most widely recognized from demonstrations that erupted on August 19, 2019 in Jayapura, Papua, a viral video of alleged racist abuse against Papuan students sparked days of protests, clashes with security forces, localized destruction, and a government‑ordered restriction of internet services. The unrest spread across towns in Papua and West Papua and culminated in a related, deadlier outbreak in Wamena in late September; casualty and damage figures remain disputed and many questions about accountability persist.
